WOMAN IN TRAVAIL
WOMAN IN TRAVAIL
John 16:20, 21The figure of a woman in birth pangs is frequently used in the Bible to express divine truth (Isaiah 23:4; 54:1; 66:7, 8; Galatians 4:19, 27; Revelation 12:2, etc.). In our Lord’s use of this delicate simile, He explains that the sorrow of the disciples over His departure from them would result in the birth pangs of joy. For as with a mother, the joy of maternity swallows up the pangs of childbirth. The pangs cease, but the joy continues. She forgets the one in the fullness of the other. The cross was at hand with its travail pangs, both for the Saviour and His disciples, but they would pass away and fullness of joy would come in the realization of the abiding presence of their Lord. Anguish over His being taken from them would only be temporary. When risen from the dead, their joy of His constant nearness would know no bounds. Many mystical expositors have interpreted our Lord’s use of the woman in travail as signifying His death as the birth pang of a perfect humanity. Paul’s use of the illustration indicates his heart pang for the sanctification of those Galatian believers (Galatians 4:19).
